Surf Photo 101- Gizmos, Putes, Etc...

A decent laptop is now an essential part of your armoury. Never used to be but times change and be glad you’re reading this now and didn’t have to deal with laptops like my Apple 180C ten years ago that had something like 8mb of RAM and found Internet Explorer a struggle… I’m a Mac geek -as are many photog’s and creative’s originally due to the Mac’s superior colour handling ability when it came to print work flows- but these days it doesn’t really matter what you have as long as it’s got a decent processor under the hood. The current MacBook Pro 13-inch would be my choice- it’s tough, good value, rock solid OS and with Photoshop CS4 on board will do all you need.

Consider the scene- a balmy June day in Hossegor, the swells a fun three-foot, the wind a light zephyr of offshore and the morning sun is just taking the dawn chill out of the air nicely.  I’m down there shooting a bunch of micro-groms, who froth 24/7, but are particularly frothy this morning cos the shorebreak barrels at Caserne look super fun and –important when you are a 12 year old micro-grom- not too deathly or heavy. 

Josh Kerr Surfing A 5'5 Stump Quite Well In Poop Waves...

I've always been a fan of Josh Kerr. Ever since spending a weekend in San Sebastian with him. He surfed hard, partied harder, pulled, and won the contest the next day (with a brutal hangover) by launching huge punts in near dry shorey section... It sucks balls he didn't get the injury wildcard for 2010 (Steds and Neco? Yaaawn). Anyhoose. This clip was filmed in one session... Scary.

Surf Photo 101- Flash...

Surf photog’s are mainly available light photographers- meaning we work with what Mother Nature is throwing at us be it sun, overcast skies or rain. The environment we work in does not lend itself to being lit artificially with flashes and studio lights (unlike those jammy skate and snowboard photog’s). That’s not to say you shouldn’t be rolling with a flash or two in your gear bag.

Forgot to post this when I saw it last week. Kirstin Prisk is a creative fellow, used to be a pro booger, now one of the most sought after wedding photogs in the South West- his work is awesome. This is supposedly the most depressing day of the year. I'm not doing too bad but a detox that's robbed me of most of my favourite food groups (Frosted Wheats, Starbucks, Guinness, West Country sausages, roast tats, white rice, etc) means I can't claim 100% :)ness. Some lucky people will surf their whole lives without ever sustaining an injury. Most of us, however, will at some point be on the receiving end of a bit of bodily punishment. It can be down to bad luck, bad judgement or in the worst case some irresponsible fool nailing you good and proper.

The State of Hawaii maybe invisible on most globes but the little bits of rock which stick up above sea level to make the islands and the reefs of the most famous surfing real estate in the world are part of a mammoth geographical feature. 132 islands, reefs and shoals stretch over 1500-miles from the ‘Big Island’ of Hawaii to the Midway Atolls (famous for the big battle in WWII). If you picked ‘em up and dumped ‘em on the good old US of A they’d stretch from San Francisco to the Gulf Coast of New Orleans.
