To say that pretty much everyone thought Kelly had it in the bag would be an understatement. Especially after his second round surf when he added an 82 to his tally to bring him up to a whopping 313. Most photogs stopped shooting for the afternoon as the light's not so hot and what was the point? KS had cremated everyone... Or so they thought.
Enter stage left Mr Greg Long, a Californian fellow and first time invitee...
A world renowned heavy water charger for sure but not someone with an Eddie pedigree so all eyes were on Bruce as the guy that could take down Kelly with a brace of good waves. The ocean turned on though and everyone scored good waves...
Even Ramon Navarro all the way from Chile got bombs...
But it was the G-Man that did it, getting the win from his 4 waves in the 2nd round... You wouldn't have bet the farm on him to do so seeing as he only got 2 waves in the first round (an 11 and a 55).
I guess it was those sessions at Aileens in Ireland which really prepped him up for Wammy!
In closing the Eddie isn't a surf contest, it's a happening, something that's a privilege to witness...
