2. There is no way round a wet wetsuit in the winter, buy two.
3. It will take exactly five minutes from when you buy a new board until you ding it on a lampost, door frame or car.

Well, I guess it is every day. Heh heh. Anyhoose- The O'Neill World Cup at the legendary Sunset Beach should be kicking off soon, maybe today, if the hell swell that closed out the North Shore has backed down enough. I get there Monday so will be bloggin' the hell out of it from then. In the meantime here's a nice little teaser clip after the jump to remind you-

We’ve been mercifully free of the disease that is localism in our islands. Sure there are places where you tread and park carefully but the innate friendliness of British and Irish surfers, borne from the days when seeing another surfer was a rarity, still holds sway. Which is why you’ll hear arrogant young Turks say things like this, ‘Yeah all the locals are super mellow, didn’t seem to mind us paddling past them at all to go deep…’ That’s what is known amongst locals as a queue, an orderly way of handling reef set-ups.
An insane quality clip from the Waldron Bros for all the people that have been less than kind to the boogs on the FB page caption competition... In the right waves- as in kegs, wedges and death slabs- lids rock. A perfectly valid way to slide around on waves. Clip after the jump-

Sweet clip from Mr Verity of all the goings on from the last weekender of the UK Pro Tour... Stick with it passed the first two minutes cos the surf is banging on Day-2. Sorry about the frame grab Gwen but that's how it comes! Clip after the jump-

Ladies and gents we are approaching the last WQS of the year long grind. The end game where the winners achieve that coveted dream tour berth and will be bathed in golden light and kisses from fair maidens whilst the losers stand out in the cold rain, in a depressing communist country, little hands pressed against the grimy window of what could have been. If they'd only got through one more heat...

The last thirty years have delivered some marvellous advances in the world we live in. Indeed for a child of the seventies like me it can all seem a bit baffling. Surfboards now come with three fins and a marvellous restraining device known as a ‘leash’. Mobile phones no longer come with a small suitcase you tow behind you full of batteries. The cassette walkman has mutated into the ultra loseable ipod which can hold many C90’s.

Mr B just posted this on FB and it reminded me it's undoubtedly the best British surf film ever. If you've not seen it go buy the DVD...

Most photographers use a small range of lenses- sports types use long lenses, landscapers use wide angles and portraitists use mids. Us surf photographer types are that rare beast that use the whole gamut from the 15mm fisheye (seen as a useless novelty lens in most peoples eyes) right through to the exotic, big 600mm telephotos.
This is because to be a good surf photographer you need to be all the above.

And so the critically obese lady has sung, the UK Pro Tour is a wrap for another season and there's a lot of happy people that will be partying into the night at the awards party. So what of today?

Owen is a good kid, humble, funny, friendly and firk me does he rip. Top 5 by the end of next year I reckon. Here he is on the same trip as the gals below just absolutely killing it. Talky heads bit stops at the 1.26 from then on the next 5-minutes are unabashed surf porn... Hit it-

Forgive me for the blatantly search engine friendly title but it does some up the following clip to a tee. Alana Blanchard and Laura Enever look hot, surf good and the Telo Islands look pretty darn sweet too. Considering we are about to be whupped by a 70mph winter storm in the UK it might take your mind off the maelstrom outside... Clip after the jump-

So dear friends to Newquay this weekend for the end of the credit crunched UK Pro Tour. Staggering into town like a punch drunk Russian boxer. The tour might have had it's oft admired and much missed Triple Crown decapitated this year (boo! hiss! we love that week! as does everyone!) but we still have the end of year ding-dong sponsored by those lovely Animals (them with the event ad over there >>>).

Batty and compadres Timmy Turner, Raph Bruhwiler and Eric Ramsey have been up in Grizzly Country- somewhere in the Pacific Northwest of Canada...
Mr Nunn of Wavelengthshire sent me this pic last week. It's a new British slab, it is nuts, it really needs a jetski to get you into it. Mr Tim of Wavelength shot it 1st and the fellas from Carve weren't far behind. So now we have the anti-Rileys... A good thing for all the natural footed slab freaks out there. I await further shots in the mags with interest...
